Q: What is the cause of this purple urine, and what is this finding called?

Answer: This is a classic case of Purple Urine Bag Syndrome (PUBS…yes, that’s really what it’s called). This colourful phenomenon is caused by bacteria (usually Providentia, Proteus, and Klebsiella spp.) that produce indoxyl phosphatase with red and blue breakdown products.
